Pet Planning: What is it?

Pet planning is including your pets in your estate plan. There are a number of ways to plan for where your pet will go in case of your death or disability. You can use your Will to name a caregiver for your pet (you might call this a “Pet Will”), or you can set up a Pet Trust to provide lasting, reliable care.

Can’t I Just Name My Pet in My Will?

Unfortunately, you can’t leave money directly to your pet in your Will. Pets themselves are considered property, and they can’t receive a direct inheritance, so this kind of “Pet Will” isn’t effective. Instead, you can use your Will to name a caregiver for your pet and leave that person money for this purpose.

What if I’m Disabled?

Your Will is only effective after you pass away. Pet planning that takes into account disability means establishing a Pet Trust. With a Pet Trust, you name a caregiver for your pet and you name a Pet Trustee to manage money left for your pet’s care. A Pet Trust can be effective during your lifetime and after your death.
